Regardless of your schedule, there are countless ways to become involved in your falcon's life here at Farmington. There are activities throughout the year that are held both during the day and in the evenings, so there's room for everyone! Feel free to look below at the descriptions of what type of work goes into each event that the PTO is in charge of at the school, and let us know what might interest you! EVENTS
Games with Grandparents (Tuesday, September 10 | 6:00 p.m.)
Co-chairs Jess Fischer head up our fantastic volunteers to decorate the lobby and set up games in designated areas to include gym, cafeteria and some classrooms. Board games, bingo and other festivities are set up in advance of event. Grandparents, family or friends are invited to bring students for an evening of fun.
Book Fair (October 3)
Volunteers will help to coordinate a book fair in the fall that runs during the school day as well as one evening, typically that of open house. Contact co-chairs Kristen Behan or Andrea Acton for more information.
Red Ribbon Week (October 21-25)
The chair will work with the guidance counselors to create a theme, copy and distribute fliers in Wednesday folders, and provide any other support for the week-long, drug-awareness event. Volunteers are needed, so contact chair Leslie Stalls for more information.
Falcon Fest (Sunday, November 10 | 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.)
Many volunteers are needed to help plan this annual, carnival-style family event typically held the first weekend of November. The event has games, food, a dunk tank, bounce house and a silent auction which includes class baskets, teacher features and principal for a day. Contact co-chairs Mitzi May or Mary Beth Turner to learn more.
American Education Week (November 11-15)
Our co-chairs come up with a theme for each day, create a calendar for this week-long event and get events approved by administration. Volunteers make copies of the calendar to distribute and decorate the lobby the weekend before. Volunteers also help our co-chairs coordinate and oversee events such as the coffee bar, lunch, etc. as well as take down decorations. Movie Night (Friday, October 25)
Movie Night chair is responsible for the following: making flyer for students to vote on movie right after Thanksgiving break, counting votes to declare movie, purchasing the movie license, sending out flyer, purchasing food and drink, sending out sign-up genius, set-up and clean-up the day of the event, making sure that REACH knows of the event, and getting cash from the treasurer to have change. Snowflake Ball (Friday, December 6)
This Friday evening father (or father-substitute)/daughter dance includes a toy drive for Toys-for-Tots, DJ, photos, photo booth, candy bar, T-shirts and decorating the school for the dance. Many volunteers are also needed for this event. Contact chair, Karen Ivey to learn more about volunteering.
Mother / Son Olympics (Friday, January 24)
To prepare for this mother (or mother-substitute)/son event, many items of preparation must be done, such as: create a sign-up genius for registration; set up the teams for the event; send name tags home with the boys prior to the event notifying them of their team; get needed volunteers to help make this event a success (that's you!). Mother-Daughter Event (Friday, February 21)
For those of you who have never seen the television show “Minute-to-Win-It,” here’s what it’s all about: “Minute-to-Win-It” is an international game show franchise where contestants take part in a series of 60-second challenges that use objects that are commonly available around the house. And now our moms and daughters get to do it, too! It will be a fun event! Contact co-chairs Raye Mullis or Bridgett Route to learn more about volunteering!
Teacher Appreciation Week (April 27- May 1)
Our co-chairs plan, recruit volunteers/items, and implement activities. TAW should have a theme and daily activities or events planned. During Teacher Appreciation week in the spring, the chairs/committee coordinate with room parents on special activities and events to show our appreciation to teachers and staff. For example: students bring in supplies and items off of the teacher wish list, providing dinners for teachers, and arrange for classes to write thank-you notes, etc. Chairs will also partner with hospitality to provide a catered lunch for teachers and staff. Field Day (Wednesday - Friday | May 6, 7 & 8)
MANY volunteers are needed to make this annual event work! Field day occurs twice a day for three days in order to accommodate all of our grades. We need parents to lead each activity on the field, so please contact one of our co-chairs, Jay Leger or Lauren Edwards for more details.
Kindergarten Celebration (Wednesday, May 20)
Volunteers will provide support to the Kindergarten teachers and parents for the celebration reception which will be held immediately following the ceremony. Volunteers for set-up and clean-up are especially needed for this morning event. Contact our kindergarten celebration chair, Deanna Gilbert, if you'd like to help out!
5th Grade Celebration (Thursday, May 21)
A theme for this afternoon celebration will be voted upon by the students, decorations and food will be decided by the teachers, and volunteers assist/carry out decorating, set-up and clean-up. More details to follow.
Walk-to-School Wednesday (First Wednesday of Each Month)
This event is held on the first Wednesday of each month that school is in session (may skip August and January). Volunteers gather on those mornings to help distribute some type of recognition for students who participate. Volunteers also help maintain safety for additional walkers at busy crosswalks. PROGRAMS & COMMITTEES
Contests
Contests co-chairs are responsible for the following: reviewing contest rules and determining the best fit into the FES calendar, preparing entry materials and advertising the contests, sourcing appropriate judges for the various contests, receiving entries and preparing them for submission to the judges, ordering appropriate recognition for all winners, preparing thank you notes for all judges, publishing winners and/or announcing winners to the school, and returning contest material. Volunteers can be plugged in for a number of these responsibilities, so please contact Karen Ivey if you're interested in learning more!
Box Tops
Farmington collects General Mills Box Tops for Education, Campbell's Labels for Education and Tyson A Plus labels 2-3 times a year for two-week periods. Volunteers are needed to process the collections by clipping, sorting the expired and preparing labels for mailing. To learn more, contact one of our co-chairs, Kym White or Lisa Godwin
Health screenings
Volunteers needed during the school day to assist with the students during these screenings. To volunteer, contact our chair, Sarah Ortiz.
Beautification
Volunteers help to maintain the school grounds by working in partnership with a landscaping company. They also decorate the school grounds for seasonal events/holidays and works to continually beautify the school grounds. Contact Rachael Hankins for more information.
Artsonia
Volunteers help to support our school's art department by pictures of student art and uploading them to the Artsonia website. Contact co-chairs Mindy Schwartz and Joe Hooker for details.
Library Committee
Library volunteers re-shelve books, help students find books on the shelves during their library time and anything else that our librarian requests. Volunteers can come weekly or bi-weekly, or they may volunteer on a per-project basis (processing books, special projects, decorations, etc.). They also may assist in performing annual inventory and design decorations for the library for various purposes, such as highlighting the beginning of the school year, the book fair, the holidays and the end of the year. Volunteer Fair Committee
The volunteer fair is mainly run by PTO board members, though we welcome the help of any parent who is interested! Responsibilities for this event includes being at event to answer questions, helping with hospitality (providing decor and food), get coffee morning of event, set up in cafeteria and take down, mingling to make sure it is going smoothly and staying within the budget. Contact our chair, Christine Woods for details!
Accelerated Reader (AR) Committee
The AR volunteers are responsible for implementing rewards and incentives for the Accelerated Reader program. Volunteers can also help to distribute rewards as well as coordinate the prizes (such as donut party, etc.). Contact co-chairs Sarah Lee or Kate Meisenheimer for more information!
Health Room Committee
Parent volunteers staff Farmington’s health room. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the health room chair, Tammy Wiygul. If children become ill or injured at school, the teacher will send them to the health room for assistance. If it is necessary for a student to go home, a parent, guardian, or emergency friend will be contacted.
Room Parents Committee
The room parent committee works with the room parents by providing them with the materials and information they need to serve in their role, as well as to communicate the needs of the staff and faculty throughout the year so that they can solicit the help and input of the other parents in their child's class.
